Аннотация: Keith Tribe's new translation presents Economy and Society as it stood when Max Weber died. One of the world's leading experts on Weber's thought, Tribe has produced a clear and faithful translation that will become the definitive English edition of one of the few indisputably great intellectual works of the past 150 years.
Max Weber was the foremost social theorist of the twentieth century; Economy and Society is Weber's most famous work after The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism. It consists of diverse essays that Weber was working on at the time of his death in 1920, ranging over subjects in economics, politics, religion, public administration, and sociology. The book was first published in German in two parts in the early 1920s, then in a more authoritative edition in the late 1950s. Economy and Society is a classic work of social theory, and is considered the founding text for modern social debates about action, rationality, bureaucracy and charisma, formal and material justice, religious beliefs, and economic conduct. In this new translation of Part I, Keith Tribe, one of the English-speaking world's leading experts on Weber, aims to present the clearest and most faithful translation yet. Tribe's translation is accompanied by commentary and notes that reflect the decades of scholarship that have passed since Guenther Roth and Claus Wittich published their English translation in 1968.--

Аннотация: The world of money is being transformed as households and organizations face changing economies and new currencies and payment systems like Bitcoin and Apple Pay gain ground. What is money, and how do we make sense of it? Money Talks is the first book to offer a wide range of alternative and unexpected explanations of how social relations, emotions, moral concerns, and institutions shape how we create, mark, and use money. This collection brings together a stellar group of international experts from multiple disciplines--sociology, economics, history, law, anthropology, political science, and philosophy--to propose fresh explanations for money's origins, uses, effects, and future. Money Talks explores five key questions: How do social relationships, emotions, and morals shape how people account for and use their money? How do corporations infuse social meaning into their financing and investment practices? What are the historical, political, and social foundations of currencies? When does money become contested, and are there things money shouldn't buy? What is the impact of the new twenty-first-century currencies on our social relations? At a time of growing concern over financial inequality, Money Talks overturns conventional views about money by revealing its profound social potential.

Аннотация: In Society and Economy, Mark Granovetter sees the economy as one of many activities in "society"--A term that refers to everything people do with one another and how this adds up to a recognizable whole. Some economic action can be well understood as people rationally using means towards well-defined ends, but much of it is harder to fit into such a simple framework. Actors follow norms that specify the "right" thing to do, at times with passionate belief, and at others, without conscious thought. They trust others when there is no obvious reason to do so. And they wield power over one another that comes from non-economic sources but has major impact on economic outcomes. The book explores how problem-solving actors assemble solutions from this kaleidoscope of principles, in ways that psychologists and philosophers describe as "pragmatic," drawing on arguments ranging from individual psychology to social networks to long-term historical and political analysis.--

Аннотация: "The essential role that institutions play in understanding economic development has long been recognized across the social sciences, including in economics. Academic and policy interest in this subject has never been higher. The Handbook of Economic Development and Institutions is the first to bring together in one single volume the most cutting-edge work in this area by the best-known international economists. The volume's editors, themselves leading scholars in the discipline, provide a comprehensive introduction, and the stellar contributors offer up-to-date analysis into institutional change and its interactions with the dynamics of economic development. This book focuses on three critical issues: the definitions of institutions in order to argue for a causal link to development, the complex interplay between formal and informal institutions, and the evolution and coevolution of institutions and their interactions with the political economy of development. Topics examined include the relationship between institutions and growth, educational systems, the role of the media, and the intersection between traditional systems of patronage and political institutions"--Publisher's description.

Аннотация: "From Nobel Prize-winning economist and New York Times bestselling author Robert Shiller, a groundbreaking account of how stories help drive economic events-and why financial panics can spread like epidemic viruses. Stories people tell-about financial confidence or panic, housing booms, or Bitcoin-can go viral and powerfully affect economies, but such narratives have traditionally been ignored in economics and finance because they seem anecdotal and unscientific. In this groundbreaking book, Robert Shiller explains why we ignore these stories at our peril-and how we can begin to take them seriously. Using a rich array of examples and data, Shiller argues that studying popular stories that influence individual and collective economic behavior-what he calls "narrative economics"-may vastly improve our ability to predict, prepare for, and lessen the damage of financial crises and other major economic events. The result is nothing less than a new way to think about the economy, economic change, and economics. In a new preface, Shiller reflects on the major challenges facing narrative economics"--

Аннотация: "Can we fight poverty and inequality while protecting the environment? The challenges are obvious. To rise out of poverty is to consume more resources, almost by definition. And many measures to combat pollution lead to job losses and higher prices that mainly hurt the poor. In Unsustainable Inequalities, economist Lucas Chancel confronts these difficulties head-on, arguing that the goals of social justice and a greener world can be compatible, but that progress requires substantial changes in public policy. Chancel begins by reviewing the problems. Human actions have put the natural world under unprecedented pressure. The poor are least to blame but suffer the most-forced to live with pollutants that the polluters themselves pay to avoid. But Chancel shows that policy pioneers worldwide are charting a way forward. Building on their success, governments and other large-scale organizations must start by doing much more simply to measure and map environmental inequalities. We need to break down the walls between traditional social policy and environmental protection-making sure, for example, that the poor benefit most from carbon taxes. And we need much better coordination between the center, where policies are set, and local authorities on the front lines of deprivation and contamination. A rare work that combines the quantitative skills of an economist with the argumentative rigor of a philosopher, Unsustainable Inequalities shows that there is still hope for solving even seemingly intractable social problems"--Publisher's description

Аннотация: This text presents Alfred Marshall's final, unfinished, and unpublished book. His main volume, Principles of Economics, was first published in 1890, and was, for a long period of time, the textbook par excellence on which generations of economists were trained. Despite its success and its importance, the book, in its eight editions, testifies to some extent to the failure of Marshall's original editorial project which should have consisted of multiple volumes and culminated with the publication of a final work on economic progress. Marshall's death in 1924 made it impossible to realize his pro.

McCloskey argues for an economic science that accepts the models and mathematics, the statistics and experiments of the current orthodoxy, but also attests to the immense amount we can still learn about human nature and the economy.
