Аннотация: "The world's collective archaeological heritage is threatened by war, development, poverty, climate change, and ignorance. To protect our collective past, archaeologists must involve the general public through interpersonal experiences that develop an interest in the field at a young age and foster that interest throughout a person's life. Contributors to this volume share effective approaches for engaging and educating learners of all ages about archaeology and how one can encourage them to become stewards of the past. They offer applied examples that are not bound to specific geographies or cultures, but rather, are approaches that can be implemented almost anywhere"--

Аннотация: Theology and the scientific imagination is a pioneering work of intellectual history that transformed our understanding of the relationship between Christian theology and the development of science. Distinguished scholar Amos Funkenstein explores the metaphysical foundations of modern science and shows how, by the 1600s, theological and scientific thinking had become almost one. Major figures like Descartes, Leibniz, Newton, and others developed an unprecedented secular theology whose debt to medieval and scholastic though shaped the trajectory of the scientific revolution. The book ends with Funkstein's influential analysis of the seventeenth century's "unprecedented fusion" of scientific and religious language. Featuring a new foreword, Theology and the Scientific imagination is a path breaking and classic work that remains a fundamental resource for historians and philosophers of science.

Аннотация: When invading a host cell, viruses seize cell machinery to make copies of their own genes. The immune system recognizes the invasion. In contrast, retroviruses colonize host cells through the process of reverse transcriptase. Retroviruses open host cell DNA and graft in their retroviral RNA, integrating into the host genome. The immune system has difficulty recognizing or ridding of foreign DNA that has become its own. Discovering Retroviruses presents the history of retrovirus discovery. Skalka illuminates retroviruses' role in evolution, human health, and disease, from the first sighting at the end of the nineteenth century to recent use in genetic engineering. Retroviral sequences in the human genome mark sites where endogenous retrovirus integrated over six million years ago. The 100,000 pieces of retrovirus DNA are remnants from germ line cell invasions and total approximately eight percent of the human genome. Through investigation of animal and human retroviral sequences, we know retroviral mutations can lead to cancers and immunodeficiencies, including HIV and leukemia. Today, researchers harness retroviruses for use in gene delivery systems and precision medicine advances. Discovering Retroviruses offers a lively perspective on stories of the major pioneers of the past century and the extraordinary roads to their discoveries, and demonstrates the growing importance of genetics to modern biomedicine.--

   Wessex (England)--Antiquities, Roman.
Аннотация: Burial evidence provides the richest record we possess for the centuries following the retreat of Roman authority. The locations and manner in which communities chose to bury their dead, within the constraints of the environmental and social milieu, reveal much about this transformational era. This book offers a pioneering exploration of the ways in which the cultural and physical environment influenced funerary traditions during the period c. AD 450-850, in the region which came to form the leading Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex. This was a diverse landscape rich in ancient remains, in the form of imposing earthworks, enigmatic megaliths and vestiges of Roman occupation. Employing archaeological evidence, complemented by toponymic and documentary sources and elucidated through landscape analysis, the author argues that particular man-made and natural features were consciously selected as foci for funerary events and ritual practice, becoming integral to manifestations of identity and power in early medieval society.

Аннотация: The 2016 presidential election launched a public debate about the role the internet plays in civic and political life. To explain the surprise election of President Trump, a long list of culprits has been identified: Russian hacks, bots, fake news, greedy and careless social networks. While these may have played a role at the edges, something far more profound and enduring is shaping digital activism on the internet in a way that favors conservatives over progressives. The Revolution That Wasn't examines the dynamics that have given a decided edge to voices on the right. The setting is North Carolina, where from 2011-2014, the author followed the political battle over the question of whether public sector employees should have the right to unionize. She tracked 34 groups across the political spectrum to understand the role digital media played in their activism and observed a rising tide of conservative digital activism that took the state to the right, resulting in the election of the most right-wing state government in the country. Using a mix of data and first-hand reporting, Schradie explains how factors such as resources, organization, class, and ideology combine to amplify messages from the right and dampen those from the left.--

Аннотация: By using both modern and ancient sources, this volume explores the relationship between official religion and popular belief in Greece, as illustrated by the relations between competing ideologies, or the relationship between ideology and mentality. It shows that the communicative aspect of the religious festival is central, and allows the reader to get to know other sides of Greece than the picture that today dominates the news resulting from the economic crisis with which the county has struggled for several years.

Аннотация: For the past fifty years, Charles Bonnet has been excavating sites in present-day Sudan and Egypt that point to the existence of a sophisticated ancient black African civilization thriving alongside the Egyptians. In The Black Kingdom of the Nile, he gathers the results of these excavations to reveal the distinctively indigenous culture of the black Nubian city of Kerma, the capital of the Kingdom of Kush. This powerful and complex political state organized trade to the Mediterranean basin and built up a military strong enough to resist Egyptian forces. Further explorations at Dukki Gel, north of Kerma, reveal a major Nubian fortified city of the mid-second millennium BCE featuring complex round and oval structures. Bonnet also found evidence of the revival of another powerful black Nubian society, seven centuries after Egypt conquered Kush around 1500 BCE, when he unearthed seven life-size granite statues of black Pharaohs (ca. 744-656 BCE). Bonnet's discoveries have shaken our understanding of the origins and sophistication of early civilization in the heart of black Africa. Until Bonnet began his work, no one knew the extent and power of the Nubian state or the existence of the black pharaohs who presided successfully over their lands. The political, military, and commercial achievements revealed in these Nubian sites challenge our long-held belief that the Egyptians were far more advanced than their southern neighbors and that black kingdoms were effectively vassal states. Charles Bonnet's discovery of this lost black kingdom forces us to rewrite the early history of the African continent.--

It is also the first to provide a full English translation of the Law, incorporating all of the more than 160 changes that have been adopted to it. This book will be of immense importance to students, scholars, practitioners, and officials working with or interested in Japan's ""military, "" a term that is recognized internationally but remains sensitive domestically.
