Аннотация: The 2016 presidential election launched a public debate about the role the internet plays in civic and political life. To explain the surprise election of President Trump, a long list of culprits has been identified: Russian hacks, bots, fake news, greedy and careless social networks. While these may have played a role at the edges, something far more profound and enduring is shaping digital activism on the internet in a way that favors conservatives over progressives. The Revolution That Wasn't examines the dynamics that have given a decided edge to voices on the right. The setting is North Carolina, where from 2011-2014, the author followed the political battle over the question of whether public sector employees should have the right to unionize. She tracked 34 groups across the political spectrum to understand the role digital media played in their activism and observed a rising tide of conservative digital activism that took the state to the right, resulting in the election of the most right-wing state government in the country. Using a mix of data and first-hand reporting, Schradie explains how factors such as resources, organization, class, and ideology combine to amplify messages from the right and dampen those from the left.--

Аннотация: "Millions of workers today labor in nontraditional situations involving part-time work, temporary agency employment, and skills underutilization or face the precariousness of long-term unemployment. To date, research has largely focused on how these experiences shape workers' well-being, rather than how hiring agents perceive and treat job applicants who have moved through these positions. Shifting the focus from workers to hiring agents, Making the Cut explores how key gatekeepers-HR managers, recruiters, talent acquisition specialists-evaluate workers with nonstandard, mismatched, or precarious employment experience. Factoring in the social groups to which workers belong-such as their race and gender-David Pedulla shows how workers get jobs, how the hiring process unfolds, who makes the cut, and who does not. Drawing on a field experiment examining hiring decisions in four occupational groups and in-depth interviews with hiring agents in the United States, Pedulla documents and unpacks three important discoveries. Hiring professionals extract distinct meanings from different types of employment experiences; the effects of nonstandard, mismatched, and precarious employment histories for workers' job outcomes are not all the same; and the race and gender of workers intersect with their employment histories to shape which workers get called back for jobs. Indeed, hiring professionals use group-based stereotypes to weave divergent narratives or "stratified stories" about workers with similar employment experiences. The result is a complex set of inequalities in the labor market. Looking at bias and discrimination, social exclusion in the workplace, and the changing nature of work, Making the Cut probes the hiring process and offers a clearer picture of the underpinnings of getting a job in the new economy"--

Аннотация: "COWARDS DON'T MAKE HISTORY examines the contributions of Orlando Fals Borda, Juana Julia Guzmán, and Ulianov Charlaka to the early development of participatory action research in the field of sociology. These Colombian activist-researchers developed participatory action research, which upholds active participation from the communities of inquiry, in order to erase distinctions between researcher and researched, encourage dialogue between academic knowledge and the people's knowledge, and transform research into a political organizing tool. COWARDS DON'T MAKE HISTORY connects Fals Borda's work in the 1970s and 1980s to present ethnographic methods. In addition to its social scientific inquiry into the everyday practices and dynamics of Fals Borda's Fundación del Caribe (the activist collective that Fals founded to produce research useful to campesino or peasant leadership), the study interrogates the manner in which the Fundación and La Rosca refigure historical methods in activism. COWARDS DON'T MAKE HISTORY demonstrates the importance of social science that emerges from the Global South and the challenge that the methodologies of Latin American social scientists pose towards Western Academic modes of research and writing. The book begins with the historical context of the Caribbean coast in the twentieth century, detailing the various moments at which campesino organizing disrupted the spread of capitalism. Chapter 1 also introduces readers to the work of the Fundación del Caribe. Chapter 3 explores how the Fundación del Caribe resignified "participation" and "research" in a region whose peasants were largely illiterate, living hand-to-mouth, and with limited access to other parts of Colombia. Chapter 5 examines the practices that encouraged peasant participation in workshops. In the concluding chapter, Rappaport employs some of the participatory action techniques in order to argue that Fals Borda is a living legacy whose work as a teacher, writer, and activist remains relevant in Colombia's contemporary moment"--

Аннотация: "The insightful chapters in this volume reveal the multiple and multifaceted intersections between mass incarceration and neoliberal precarity. Both mass incarceration and the criminal justice system are profoundly implicated in the production and reproduction of the low-wage "exploitable" precariat, both within and beyond prison walls. The carceral state is a regime of labor discipline-and a growing one-that extends far beyond its own inmate labor. This regime not only molds inmates into compliant workers willing and expected to accept any "bad" job upon release but also compels many Americans to work in such jobs under threat of incarceration, all the while bolstering their "exploitability" and socioeconomic marginality"--
