Аннотация: "This volume explores how emergent patterns of complex syntax - that is, syntactic structures beyond a simple clause - relate to the local contingencies of action formation in social interaction. It examines both the on-line emergence of clause-combining patterns as they are 'patched together' on the fly, as well as their routinization and sedimentation into new grammatical patterns across a range of languages - English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Mandarin, and Swedish. The chapters investigate how the real-time organization of complex syntax relates to the unfolding of turns and actions, focusing on: (i) how complex syntactic patterns, or routinized fragments of 'canonical' patterns, serve as resources for projection, (ii) how complex syntactic patterns emerge incrementally, moment-by-moment, out of the real-time trajectories of action, (iii) how formal variants of such patterns relate to social action, and (iv) how all of these play out within the multimodal ecologies of action formation. The empirical findings presented in this volume lend support to a conception of complex syntax as fundamentally temporal, emergent, dialogic, sensitive to local interactional contingencies, and interwoven with other semiotic resources"--

Аннотация: "Language Beyond the Classroom is an edited volume of essays that offers detailed, how-to guides for developing, implementing, and evaluating service-learning programs for a variety of languages. Contributions here present civic-engagement programs for several languages, including French, German, Russian, and Spanish, with curricula that can be adapted to any language program. The authors of each essay engage with the growing pedagogical emphasis on experiential learning, providing theoretical and practical advice, including syllabi, for language educators. Language Beyond the Classroom is a timely exploration of the variety and richness of service-learning in language instruction, and contributes to a 21st-century emphasis on community engagement and cultural contextualization in second-language pedagogy" -- From back cover.

Аннотация: The chapters collected in this volume examine how the sociohistorical and cultural context may influence structural features of lexis and text types. Each paper pays particular attention to social 'labels' and attitudes (conservative, religious, ideological, endearing, or other), thereby focusing on their dynamic and historical dimension. Changes in these are analyzed in order to explain morphological, lexical, and textual changes that would otherwise be hard to account for. Together, they provide a varied window on the effect of historical versions of a dynamic society on lexis and text. Examining lexical and textual change in history from a sociocultural perspective teaches us a great deal - not just about the past, but it also makes us think about similar phenomena in the present, enhancing our knowledge about how universally human some of these phenomena are.

Аннотация: Compliments are among the most widely studied speech acts in pragmatics. The present study takes a new sequential approach by investigating compliments in context, considering compliment form, as part of a Positive Remark continuum, with the respective Response Strategy uttered in response. Analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively in multi-party conversations of the Santa Barbara Corpus of American English, the sequences suggest a connection between the address and reference terms in the Positive Remarks and the strategies chosen as a response.

Аннотация: "Though positioning has been addressed in social psychology and in identity construction, less attention has been paid to the specific linguistic markers which are drawn upon in discourse to position the self and other(s). This volume focuses on address terms, pragmatic markers, code switching/choice and orthography, the indexicalities of which are explored in different communicative activities. The volume is unusual in: i) the range of languages which are covered: Bergamasco, Brazilian Portuguese, English, Finnish, French, Georgian, Greek, Italian, Latin, Russian, Spanish and Swedish; ii) the inclusion of different communicative settings and text-types: workplace emails, everyday and institutional conversations, interviews, migrant narratives, radio phone-ins, dyadic and group settings, road-signs, service encounters; iii) its consideration of both synchronic and diachronic factors; iv) its mix of theoretical and methodological approaches. The volume illustrates some of the linguistic means speakers draw on to position themselves and others and hopes to stimulate further research studies in this vein"--

Аннотация: The book deals with the linguistic base of political discourse. It offers a theoretical model of the imbalance of power in human interaction from language communication to socio-political relations. It uses the basic principles of social semiotics to create a match between sociolinguistics and political science. The structural "semiology" of Ferdinand de Saussure and Roland Barthes' and Levi-Strauss' "myth" theories are referred to in support of the idea that human collective psychology is regularly manipulated by politically-based ideological narratives that "go without saying". In the movement "out" of the structuralist binary oppositions between "right" and "wrong", Derrida's post-structural "deconstruction" contributes to the critique of western liberal democracy as regards "equality" and communal knowledge about the political truth. The book will appeal to researchers and university students of both linguistics and political science, as well as specialists in philosophy of language, philosophy of politics, communication theory and social psychology.--

Аннотация: Although there are many studies on linguistic variation as it relates to both "traditional" and "new" media such as film, TV, newspapers, and online behavior, little has been written about spoken performance in overt but face-to-face conversations. This book bridges that gap, and focuses on an "in between" zone between casual face-to-face conversations and the type of heavily scripted language of most traditional spoken media. The book draws upon a substantial amount of empirical data in its investigation of the role played by performance texts in creating, maintaining and challenging imagined communities and focuses upon the ways in which performance contributes to people's sense of the kinds of use for which dialect/variational use is appropriate and those for which it is not. It sheds light on how such stylization intersects with multiple social indexes and how performers and other creative artists challenge and mock hegemonic practices through enregistering a defined set of linguistic variables in the context of their performance and other associated written texts.

Аннотация: Language is central to our existence and it happens to be the most sophisticated product of the human mind. It is inconceivable to think of ourselves, our societies, our ideas, cultures or identities without language. It is the primary means of socialization, and whatever we know is a result of it. It is the primary medium of construction and dissemination of knowledge, and structures our thought processes in important ways that constitute our identity. In very complex ways, it interacts with the social, political and economic power structures that remain significant in defining the identities.
