Аннотация: In a changing climate, livestock production is expected to exhibit dual roles of mitigation and adaptation in order to meet the challenge of food security. This book approaches the issues of livestock production and climate change through three sections: I. Livestock production, II. Climate change and, III. Enteric methane amelioration. Section I addresses issues of feed quality and availability, abiotic stress (heat and nutritional) and strategies for alleviation, livestock generated nitrogen and phosphorus pollution, and approaches for harnessing the complex gut microbial diversity. Section.

Аннотация: This publication presents the results of the collaborative research, commencing with a report on the collection of a broad range of genetic material of fodder potential in Belize, the Yucatan and Guatemala, the initial evaluation of some of this material in Belize and a brief review of the impact of the collection on forage development over the past 30 years (Chapter 2); in fact this germplasm collection stimulated much of the work reported in this volume. An analysis of the value and potential of Stylosanthes genetic material adapted to heavy clay soils follows. This study mainly focuses on S. hamata and its relatives, and is based in part on collections made concurrently in the Caribbean islands and South America as part of the collaborative programme (Chapter 3). The Belize collections of Desmanthus species stimulated interest in the genus and based on those collections and others made later by other collectors, studies were undertaken on the potential of the genus generally, and specifically for its potential for development for heavy clay soils (Chapters 4 and 5). Chapters 6 through 9 report on the steps undertaken to select and test germplasm for adaptation for the heavy clay soils of the dry Australian tropics and subtropics where Desmanthus species were the most successful of those tested. The variation within the genus as related to its distribution and its adaptation to Australian environments is discussed. Chapter 10 provides recent advances in the development of forages for heavy clay soils in Australia. The final series of chapters (11 through 19) describes the Belizean environments for which forage germplasm was being selected and the testing of the regionally collected legume accessions for their adaptation to, and suitability for, pastures on clay soils in a range of environments compared to exotic material.

Аннотация: This book contains a collection of 14 case studies from around the globe that illustrate the impact of a range of land-use changes on the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of soils and provide a snapshot of the challenges faced in ensuring sustainable soil management in tropical and savannah environments. This book is not a comprehensive account of all the drivers of soil change in the tropics, nor does it cover all areas of the tropics. It does, however, take a broad view of the tropics, with the inclusion of studies from South Africa and the dry sub-humid tropics of the Kalahari as well as the humid tropics. Tropics are drawn from a wide geographical area including South and Central America, South East Asia, India and Africa, and the chapters have been contributed by authors from all of these areas as well as Europe, North America, Australasia and Japan. It thus provides a snapshot of a range of factors affecting soils across the globe. From this, emerges topics that can be grouped into the following themes: the effects of land-use change on soil microbial populations; urban soils, agriculture and soil contamination; and land-use effects on soil carbon and soil organic matter.

Аннотация: "This book aims to provide readers with the latest information on important virus diseases of crops in tropical and subtropical countries and the envisaged directions into the future of plant virus control. The volume comprises 18 chapters. The first chapter covers general information on the impact of virus diseases, methods for estimating disease severity, recent data on host-virus interactions, serological and molecular techniques for the diagnosis of virus pathogens, and disease management strategies. Subsequent chapters examine selected virus diseases, inclusive of the hosts, vectors and viruses and their intricate relationships, symptoms development, virus transmission, host resistance and the underlying biochemical and genetic factors leading to disease, as well as their control using a variety of techniques including genetic modification. The structure of the various virus epidemics covered in this book is different and complex, dependent on the nature of the virus or viruses, their relationship with their vectors, geographical location, among other factors such as political and social approaches that deal with food security. Much progress has been achieved, but there is much work remaining on the pursuit and development of knowledge-based disease management strategies, regulatory policies and synergies between all the stakeholders."
