Аннотация: "Martin Heidegger held Plato responsible for inaugurating the slow slide of the West into nihilism and the apocalyptic crisis of modernity. In this book, Gregory Fried defends Plato against Heidegger's critiques. While taking seriously Heidegger's analysis of human finitude and historicity, Fried argues that Heidegger neglects the transcending ideals that necessarily guide human life as situated in time and place. That neglect results in Heidegger's disastrous politics, unhinged from a practical reason grounded in the philosophical search from a truth that transcends historical contingency. Thinking both with and against Heidegger, Fried shows how Plato's skeptical idealism provides an ethics that captures both the situatedness of finite human existence and the need for transcendent ideals. The result is a novel way of understanding politics and ethical life that Fried calls a polemical ethics, which mediates between finitude and transcendence by engaging in constructive confrontation with both traditions and other persons. The contradiction between the founding ideals of the United States and its actual history of racism and slavery provides an occasion to discuss polemical ethics in practice"--

Аннотация: "This book is an exercise in theoretical conversation. Two of the most iconic thinkers of the twentieth century, Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) and Isaiah Berlin (1909-1997) fundamentally disagreed on central issues in politics, history and philosophy. In spite of their overlapping life-stories and experiences as Jewish émigré intellectuals, they held mutual dislike for each other, Berlin going so far as to characterise Arendt as representing 'everything that I detest most'. Drawing on a wealth of new archival material, Kei Hiruta traces the development of the Arendt-Berlin conflict, from their first meeting in wartime New York and the second meeting soon after the establishment of the State of Israel, to their widening intellectual chasm during the 1950s, the Eichmann controversy, their final missed opportunity to engage with each other at a 1967 conference, and Berlin's continuing animosity towards Arendt after her untimely death in 1975. Hiruta juxtaposes political philosophy with intellectual history to examine key issues that simultaneously connected and divided Arendt and Berlin, including the meaning and value of freedom, the nature of totalitarianism and its patterns of emergence, evil and the Nazi Holocaust, human agency and moral responsibility, Zionism, American democracy, Britain's imperial past and its post-war liberal present, and the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. Written in a lively and accessible style, Hannah Arendt and Isaiah Berlin tells, for the first time, the full story of the adversarial relationship between Arendt and Berlin, and draws important lessons for political theory and philosophy today"--

Аннотация: A transcript of Leo Strauss's key seminars on Plato's Protagoras. This book offers a transcript of Strauss's seminar on Plato's Protagoras taught at the University of Chicago in the spring quarter of 1965, edited and introduced by renowned scholar Robert C. Bartlett. These lectures have several important features. Unlike his published writings, they are less dense and more conversational. Additionally, while Strauss regarded himself as a Platonist and published some work on Plato, he published little on individual dialogues. In these lectures Strauss treats many of the great Platonic and Straussian themes: the difference between the Socratic political science or art and the Sophistic political science or art of Protagoras; the character and teachability of virtue, its relation to knowledge, and the relations among the virtues, courage, justice, moderation, and wisdom; the good and the pleasant; frankness and concealment; the role of myth; and the relation between freedom of thought and freedom of speech. In these lectures, Strauss examines Protagoras and the sophists, providing a detailed discussion of Protagoras as it relates to Plato's other dialogues and the work of modern thinkers. This book should be of special interest to students both of Plato and of Strauss.

Chapters detail personal experiences and reflections on the intellectual viability of a non-left-leaning political philosophy, arguing that conservative thought has an important place in contemporary academia"--
