Аннотация: James McElvenny explores the influential currents in the philosophy of language and linguistics of the first half of the 20th century, from the perspective of the English scholar C.K. Ogden (1889-1957). Ogden was connected to several of the most significant figures of the modernist period, including Bertrand Russell, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Victoria Lady Welby, Otto Neurath and Rudolf Carnap. In investigating these connections, McElvenny reveals links between early analytic philosophy, semiotics and linguistics in a crucial period of their respective histories and in turn sheds light on the intellectual history of the early 20th century.

Аннотация: "Across the world, professional linguistic inquiry is in full bloom, largely as result of pioneering thinkers who helped rapidly modernize the study of human language in the last century. As the field continues to move forward, further solidifying its position as a conduit of insight into the human condition, it is essential to take stock of the theoretical primitives that have given linguistics its intellectual foundation. This volume does precisely that, inspecting the load-bearing components of the edifice upon which contemporary linguistics has been constructed"--

Аннотация: "Cross-theoretical Examinations of Interlocutors and their Individual Differences examines interlocutors and their individual differences from four theoretical lenses: the cognitive-interactionist approach, sociocultural theory, the variationist approach, and complexity theory. Each section explores what role(s) these individuals have, assesses how their theorized IDs influence L2 learning opportunities and processes, and provides empirical examples of how such research may be robustly undertaken within each framework. The concluding chapter synthesizes the theoretical overviews and empirical studies, highlighting connections across approaches and outlining robust steps for future research. Collectively, the chapters in this edited volume provide an opportunity to address the relationship(s) between interaction among interlocutors (however theorized), and to shed light on how these individuals have the potential to impact the central concern of second language acquisition, L2 development. To maximize readability and impact, the chapters follow the same organizing questions, inviting the engagement of L2 researchers, students, and teachers alike"--

Аннотация: In the context of increased movement across borders, this book examines how key cultural texts and concepts are transferred between nations and languages as well as across different media. The texts examined in this book are considered fundamental to their source culture and can also take on a particular relevance to other (target) cultures. The chapters investigate cultural transfers and differences realised through translation and reflect critically upon the implications of these with regard to matters of cultural identity. The book offers an important contribution to cultural approaches in translation studies, with ramifications across different disciplines, including literary studies, history, philosophy, and gender studies. The chapters offer a range of cultural and methodological frameworks and are written by scholars from a variety of language and cultural backgrounds, Western and Eastern.

Аннотация: "Though positioning has been addressed in social psychology and in identity construction, less attention has been paid to the specific linguistic markers which are drawn upon in discourse to position the self and other(s). This volume focuses on address terms, pragmatic markers, code switching/choice and orthography, the indexicalities of which are explored in different communicative activities. The volume is unusual in: i) the range of languages which are covered: Bergamasco, Brazilian Portuguese, English, Finnish, French, Georgian, Greek, Italian, Latin, Russian, Spanish and Swedish; ii) the inclusion of different communicative settings and text-types: workplace emails, everyday and institutional conversations, interviews, migrant narratives, radio phone-ins, dyadic and group settings, road-signs, service encounters; iii) its consideration of both synchronic and diachronic factors; iv) its mix of theoretical and methodological approaches. The volume illustrates some of the linguistic means speakers draw on to position themselves and others and hopes to stimulate further research studies in this vein"--
